What does a Speech Pathologist actually DO?

Speech pathology supports meaningful, everyday communication. This can involve working on speech sounds, understanding and using language, social interaction, literacy, and other skills that help people express themselves and connect with others. Every person’s communication profile is different, so support is always tailored to their individual strengths, needs, and goals. The areas below give an overview of the different ways support can be shaped around each individual.

How Can Services Be Accessed?

Speech Pathology can be delivered in different settings depending on your needs, preferences, and goals.

Mobile Therapy

Delivered at home or in everyday environments, mobile therapy offers convenience, comfort, and opportunities to practise skills where they’re most needed.

School Visits

Delivered within educational settings, school visits support participation, collaboration, and communication in the environments where children learn and interact each day.

Online Sessions

Delivered online, telehealth offers flexible and accessible support from home or school while still allowing therapy to be tailored to individual goals and needs.

How Services Can Be Funded

Private Services

You can access speech pathology privately without a referral. This allows for flexible scheduling and immediate access to support. Private services may be suitable if you are not accessing funding or prefer to begin therapy without waiting for additional approvals.

NDIS - Self & Plan Managed

Speech pathology can be funded through the NDIS for individuals with an eligible plan.

Services are available for self-managed and plan-managed participants.

If you’re unsure how to use your funding, I’m happy to help guide you through the process.

Medicare Rebates

Some individuals may be eligible for a Medicare rebate through a GP referral (e.g. a Chronic Disease Management Plan or other applicable programs). These typically provide a limited number of sessions per year.

If you’re unsure whether you’re eligible, I recommend speaking with your GP.
